Arts and Crafts architecture in Dartmouth - illustration of Bushell's Restaurant
Arts and Crafts architecture in Dartmouth.
These days the ground floor of Number 24 South Embankment is a restaurant (currently Bushell's) and above are beautiful apartments, all commanding spectacular views across the River Dart to Kingswear.
Built in 1895, this fabulous building was actually built as offices for Renwick Wilton & Co, a coal bunkering company. The interesting design draws inspiration from the Arts and Crafts movement, an era of design which attempted to move away from mass production.
The arched windows, decorative stone work, stained glass windows (on the side elevation) and carved wooden fireplaces and doors (internally) indicate the main principles of the movement which are simplicity, asymmetry, a variety of materials, traditional construction and craftsmanship.
